I do recommend installing SP1 and the Model Update too now you've established that it does. I didn't mention installing SP1 before because I wanted to make sure the 'base level' ATR worked OK first. No problem, people understandably get annoyed when something they paid hard cash for doesn't work.

If however you're still having problems with a 'base level' install of the ATR, we need to delve a little further. If your experience is better, all to the good, and we can look at a bug-free update of the FMC procedures, if thats what you require. Now open FSX and run the ATR and see how you get on. Once it's all installed, run the ATR Configuration Manager (again by right-click Run As Administrator), set the options you want, and click Save. Now, when you re-install the ATR, make sure you right-click the installer file and select Run As Administrator. This will put your FSX back prior to the install of the ATR. You should see a Flight One Software folder, go into this, and if there is a Flight One ATR 72-500 folder there, delete it. If there is a Flight One ATR 72-500 folder still there, delete it. Once the unistall program is complete, navigate to your Flight Simulator X folder, Simobjects/Airplanes. To completely unistall the ATR before doing this, use Programs and Fetures in Control Panel (I'm assuming you use Vista, you dont specify this but you do mention DX10 which is Vista only). See if you're still getting the same errors. Re-install the ATR as it comes, don't update the FMC procedures in any way. I believe the only recourse now is to remove the ATR72-500 product and try to get a full refund. After many hours of reviewing the Flight1 Forum I still do not have any resolution for the problems experiencing. A forum does NOT meet the needs of this kind of product problem and support. I am disappointed that I cannot get direct support for the ATR, this expensive product. Other aircraft I use without failures: PMDG-747 and Level-D-767. Without FMC use, Crash (quit) random when flying.
